Going back to basics: timeless techniques for securing your data in increasingly technical world.
About this session
This event is designed for not-for-profit organisations that are committed to securing their valuable data and ensuring they retain the ongoing trust and confidence of the people that matter to them - whether that means donors, supporters, service users, partners, staff, volunteers or anyone else with an interest in the organisation's work.
Information security and data protection are two distinct but related topics. Information security is like protecting a treasure chest that holds valuable information from unauthorised access and threats, while data protection ensures that the personal treasures inside, like names and addresses, are handled properly and kept private according to regulations. However, we’ve noticed a few trends lately:
- People looking for technical solutions to non-technical problems (and then being disappointed when they don’t find them).
- Even small mistakes or oversights in how systems have been set up having devastating effects for an organisation.
- Confusion about the latest developments in data protection rules – so much uncertainty and change meaning that many are losing track of where we’re at with developments such as the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI), the Data (Use and Access) Bill, and the new Digital Information and Smart Data Bill (DISD).
- People worrying about the wrong problems, such as carrying out extensive security due diligence on suppliers (checking that established, well-managed cloud solutions have been properly penetration tested and so on) while glossing over matters closer to home, such as ensuring that access rights for systems are being kept up to date and ensuring that data is being backed up properly.
- Fraudsters becoming increasingly good at what they do, and the training provided to staff becoming increasingly ineffective at defending against blatant scams.
…and that’s before we even start talking about AI, automated decision-making, and the latest ‘zero day’ cyber attacks.
Thankfully, some concepts never change. Technology and regulations come and go, things change… but the fundamentals of risk management, compliance, data protection principles, and cybersecurity governance stay reassuringly constant. Yes, the specifics change and the detail matters – but there’s a lot to be said for going back to fundamentals when we’re struggling to keep on top of it all.
This session goes back to basics and will attempt to cut through the jargon and noise to pull data protection and cyber/information security together in a way that makes it manageable for all of us.
What will attendees gain from attending this session?
- Learn from others and avoid common mistakes that lead to serious data security issues.
- Stay informed about new data protection developments, including insights on the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill.
- Explore the core principles of risk management and cybersecurity governance, and their relevance in these rapidly changing times.
- Learn more about how to focus on critical internal issues, such as establishing robust data governance and security measures.
- Discuss effective strategies that equip staff to handle sophisticated scams.
- And as always… enjoy all the cake you can eat (fruit and other options are provided also)!
